The BB Guide to Thanksgiving Guesthood

We don’t fancy ourselves the Ms. Manners of Brooklyn media, but we do know this: If someone invites you to Thanksgiving you better not show up empty handed. Here are our suggestions for gifts that will get you invited back next year. If you’re hosting, check out our turkey buying guide.

DIY:
Brooklyn Kitchen

Want to go homemade? Check out a class at the Brooklyn Kitchen to get it just right. There are still a few openings for their awesome annual pie class on November 24, and there’s room in Thanksgiving Side Dishes with Brooklyn Goodies (Salvatore Ricotta, veggies from Added Value) on November 17 as well.

Sweets:
Baked
Red Hook, 718-222-0345.
Sure, their seasonal pies are great, but three words: pumpkin whoopie pies. Yes. Order by noon on November 25th, open 7-7 on Wednesday, November 26, closed Thanksgiving Day.

Sweet Melissa
Cobble Hill and Park Slope, 718- 855-3410, 718-502-9153.
The Park Slope and Cobble Hill locations will bake a variety of specials. Highlights: Sour cherry pie with pistachio crumble, $32; fresh ginger custard pumpkin pie, $28; and pear cranberry pie with ginger snap crumble, $32. Order by November 23, open 9am to noon for pick-up only on Thanksgiving day.

Bread Stuy
Bed Stuy, 718-771-0633.
Again, they’ve got all the classics. We’re hoping a peach cobbler, $30; or pumpkin spice cake (priced by size) makes it to the BB turkey day spread.

Cheese/Savory:
Bedford Cheese Shop
Williamsburg, 718-599-7588.
The cheese plate of the day costs just $25 for three cheeses and a box of crackers, all selected by the skilled mongers at Bedford, no worries on your end. If you want to be a little fancier, go for the board, made from Vermont maple for serving plus two wedges of cheese, a cheese knife, a jar of mustard and crackers for $65. Ten bucks more will get you the same assortment with one additional cheese and a maple paddle. Good for once everyone is drunk and hijinks ensue.

Bierkraft
Park Slope, 718-230-7600.
The shop stocks all the essentials: beer, meat, cheese and chocolate. They suggest an all-American appetizer plate with Harpoon Cider and Surryano ham. Cider is lower in alcohol and less expensive than most wines, so you can drink it all day. Plus, the pure apple flavor is a real match with Thanksgiving fare. Made by Virginia country ham masters Edwards, Surryano combines the best of American Berkshire pork and European curing methods. The combination, clear, crisp apple cider and salty, intensely porky slices of ham, will redefine your Thanksgiving palate. Closed Thanksgiving Day, so plan ahead.

Wine:
Vine Wine
Long Island City, 718-433-2611.
LIC is on the way home for lots of Brooklynites who commute on the G and the 7, and Vine’s Thanksgiving wine deals are so good we couldn’t resist a Queens option. You can choose from one of two six-bottle boxes, priced at $65 and $100. Each six-pack contains three reds, two whites and a sparkling wine. Vine will be tasting Thanksgiving wines all day in extended pre-Thanksgiving hours on Wednesday until 11 and open on turkey day from 10 to 2.

Blue Angel
Williamsburg, 718-388-2210.
All you need to know about Blue Angel is this: delivery, no minimum order. As of press time they hadn’t set their Thanksgiving hours (we’ll update on the site when we know). They recommend La Pierre Morgon, a Cru Beaujolais with enough interest and depth to compete with all those savory Thanksgiving flavors, for $26; and Gruet Brut Rose, a delicious, and hard-to-find sparkling wine from New Mexico for $18. For more options, check out their tasting Saturday, November 22 from 5-7pm.

Big Nose Full Body
Park Slope, 718-369-4030.
If you want to taste the wines you bring to the party before you show up with them head to Big Nose Full Body. They’ll be tasting Pinot Noirs for Thanksgiving on Saturday, November 15 and Thanksgiving whites on Saturday, November 22 from 4-6pm. All tasting wines will be 15 percent off while they’re pouring samples. Great if you want to get your shopping done early, you responsible guest, you.
