Brooklyn's Food Network

While one Brooklyn chef has been making repeat appearances on The Food Network, Liza de Guia has been busy building her own, one-woman “channel,” food. curated.

The self-taught documentarian worked for years as a host and videographer for networks like Plum TV, but since this July she’s been shooting her own mini-docs about the quirkiest and most talented chefs, bakers, beekeepers, fishermen and hot farmers in Brooklyn and the East End (she’s yet to film any in Queens). Starting today, she’ll be branching into Manhattan, with a video about Back Forty’s butcher and chef de cuisine Shanna Pacifico. (Check her site later this afternoon).

Some of her subjects may be familiar to Brooklyn foodies, but her videos bring them life. Rather than having to imagine what it’s like to keep bees in New York, she takes you to the roof where the general manager and owner of Roberta’s and Frankies Sputino’s GM tend to their Italian honeybees. She trails BB friend and Sweet Deliverance Chef Kelly Geary at Paisely Farms, the source of her CSA-supplied food, and brings her camera into a backyard urban farm in Ditmas Park with BK FarmyardsStacey Murphy.

She even captured a surprisingly personal side of Matthew Tilden of SCRATCHbread (whose breads are worth the trip to this nook of the South Slope)–without filming his face.

But her funniest, hammiest subject to date has to be Dan Machin, the North Fork farmer in “Notes from a Lone Acre: 1 Dude. 1 Acre. Many Little Anecdotes” who sells his “game-changing” produce in Park Slope every Sunday from 11-5 at J.J. Bryne Park.

“Everyone does cooking videos,” says Liza. “But there’s much more that goes on in a kitchen besides cooking. There’s so much passion involved and to hear those stories makes you fall in love with the food even more.”
