Shopkeeper and Brooklyn native Alyssa Becker has filled her Boerum Hill wine store, Donna Da Vine, with the best of both New York State and the Pacific Northwest for the last two years–an homage to her hometown-girl status and her love of the West Coast. Now she’s opening up a small grocery-and-beer store next door that will combine Washington State finds with locally made products.
Scheduled to open the second week in May, Da Vine Provisions will be a well-edited gourmet shop in a beautifully crafted space. But it’s what’s on the shelves that’s sure to excite the neighbors.
Part of a local trend of small gourmet stores popping up all over Brooklyn–from Bklyn Larder in Park Slope to The Greene Grape Provisions in Fort Greene, The Brooklyn Kitchen Labs and Marlow and Sons in Williamsburg, and Crop to Cup in Brooklyn Heights–this is the first locavore food boutique in Boerum Hill. Borough-made products will include a grab bag of Brooklyn’s best food makers, including McClure’s Pickles and Brooklyn Brine Co. pickled vegetables, Anarchy in a Jar jam, Fine and Raw chocolates, SCRATCHbread, and Salvatore Bklyn ricotta. There will also be imported charcuterie and cheeses, and Becker also hopes to bring in some local desserts, which could include baked goods from Kumquat Cupcakery and Steve’s Key Lime Pie (her personal favorite), though nothing has been finalized yet, with the opening still almost a month away. Down the road, she dreams of partnering with Blue Marble, located just across the street, to create signature ice cream flavors, perhaps some made with wine.
The shop will also focus on beer, as a complement to her wine shop next door (current New York State law does not allow the sale of beer or packaged food products on the same premises as retail wine or liquor sales–it’s complicated). There will be growlers of local brews (including local favorites like Sixpoint Craft Ales, and Brooklyn Brewery beers) as well as Pacific Northwest microbrews that you don’t normally see in beer cases around Brooklyn (fingers crossed for Deschutes Brewery’s Black Butte Porter –ed.). At Donna Da Vine, Becker hosts frequent wine tasting and pairing events, and plans to do the same with beers at Da Vine Provisions.
Donna Da Vine serves the neighborhood well with their popular special order program, which allows customers to pre-order just about any hard-to-find wine, as long as Becker can track it down. (She says many European transplants use the service to get the more difficult-to-locate tastes of home.) She’s planning to do the same at Da Vine Provisions, with beer, cheese, and charcuterie special orders that will help well-traveled neighbors get their hands on products they discovered abroad.
Best of all, the wine shop and gourmet shop will both roll out a “to go” program this summer, designed to package wines, beers, or even picnic baskets full of food. “You can call ahead, and give us a time,” explains Becker, “and we’ll have it ready to go when you get here, so you can pick it up on your way out of town.”
Da Vine Provisions is located at 355 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt Street and Bond Street; no phone yet, opening in mid-May.
