This Week: Permanent Wave Beneift for Japan Anti-Nuclear Movement

By

Feminist group Permanent Wave will hold another benefit concert on Thursday night. This time around, the show is a fundraiser for Human Recovery Project and the women’s anti-nuclear movement in Japan.

Following the earthquake earlier this year, there is still plenty of concern about radiation from the nuclear plant. Many residents are too poor to move elsewhere, and are trapped living in contaminated areas without much, if any, help from the government. After initial support from the global community, coverage of the ongoing struggle in Japan has taken a back seat to other events.

The Human Recovery Project is a DIY group in Japan dedicated to supporting victims of the earthquake, tsunami and radiation. They hold gigs in disaster areas that includes a van full of food and supplies for victims, plus they help organize demonstrations against the government for the relative lack of concern for safety.

Permanent Wave will host their benefit show on Thursday night, at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge (89 Varet Street between Humboldt and Graham). The Suzan (from Japan), Field Mouse, Speedy Ortiz (of Quilty) and Me&Mars will perform, plus there will be a bake sale and speakers.

The doors are at 8pm, it’s all ages, and it will cost $7 to get in.
