Overlord, The Walking Hellos and Pretendo will perform at Union Hall on Saturday.
If you like both graphic novels and indie rock (and who doesn’t?), you might want to head over to Union Hall (702 Union Street) on Thursday night for the Second Annual Music and Cartoonist Show. The show will feature cartoon slideshows created and performed by graphic novelists Jason Little (Motel Art Improvement Service) and Lauren R. Weinstein (Goddess of War), plus host R. Sikoryak (Masterpiece Comics). There will also be performances by Overlord, The Walking Hellos and Pretendo.
Overlord is an indie-pop group based in Brooklyn. They pull influence from the 1960s British invasion bands plus the pop and rock of more recent decades. Their latest album, In Soviet Russia My Heart Breaks You, combines melodic lines with bouncy pop and a little bit of doo-wop.
The Walking Hellos are comprised of four multi-instrumentalist ladies–Myla Goldberg, Val Opielski, Rose Thomson and Laura Cromwell–from Brooklyn, who play a soft blend of folk and pop-rock. They incorporate a mixture of sound loops and banjo with guitar and other instruments to make their unique sound.
Another locally-based trio, Pretendo has a punk rock spirit with songs to match, mixing their high-energy sound with a little bit of surf and garage rock. Their album, ][, came out in 2006.
The 21-and-over show starts at 9 p.m. (doors are at 8pm) on Thursday, January 5. Tickets are $8, and can be purchased ahead of time or at the door.
