The Usual Tyrant

By

The last time Sam Mendes and Kevin Spacey worked together was on a film that forever turned fluttering plastic bags into a thing of beauty. In their current collaboration, Richard III, Mendes uses contemporary costumes and staging for the Shakespeare classic, making its message of ruthless power even more relevant today. Spacey, meanwhile, is mesmerizing in the villainous title role (which Mendes says he was “born to play”). This is the last production of the three-year-long Bridge Project, a partnership between BAM, The Old Vic in London, and Neal Street that has mixed American and British actors in productions of classic plays around the world. BAM is the final stop and there are still tickets left to upcoming performances, though you’ll find more seats toward the end of the run. It closes March 4.
