Creativetime Sand Castle Contest Hits Rockaway

By

Last Friday, a group of artists invaded Rockaway Beach for Creative Time’s Sandcastle Competition.

This was no ordinary contest, and only one of the entries was a traditional castle. Really, it was a beachfront art show that showed off the many ways that creative people can use sand as a medium. We saw giant holes, beautiful sculptures, unbelievable sand architecture, and even performance pieces.

The artists had three hours to create their pieces, then a panel of judges decided on the winner. Third place went to Jen DeNike’s sculpture of a woman, second went to William Lamson’s almost unbelievably smooth cone of sand, and the grand prize winners were Jennifer Cantrone and Paul Outlaw for their human fountain performance piece. So let that be sand castle inspiration for what’s looking to be a gorgeous beach weekend.
