Happy 100th Birthday Julia Child

By

Today would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday, and there are a few things around Brooklyn you can do to celebrate.

For one, you can watch the above video, from The French Chef, the pioneering cooking show Julia did with WGBH Boston. It is so far from the slick sets and glam lighting of the food network you will die from delight. And boeuf bourguignon is one hell of a recipe to know how to cook well.

You could also head to the powerHouse Arena tonight for a celebration of Julia’s life and work with food bloggers and writers from around Brooklyn. There will be snacks, wine and a bake-off.

Or, enter our photo caption contest to win a copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, as well a new biography of Julia by writer Bob Spitz and a randomly selected book by one of the foodie participants at the powerHouse event. We’ll pick winners at 3pm.

Whisk is waiting until the weekend to celebrate, with a sale, cake and other goodies.

Julia and Paul Child loved sending eclectic Valentine's Day cards to their friends.

Le Comptoir will be offering quintessential Julia dishes, plus a glass of wine for $24 starting tonight, through the end of August. It will be a rotating cast of Julia favorites, kicking offwith fish bourride (similar to bouillabaisse) tonight, and then moving to dishes like coq au vin, canard a l’orange and other Frenchie classics. You can check the plate du jour on their Facebook page.

Or you could just stay in with a few bottles of wine,  whip up a boeuf bourguignon and a seasonal fruit clafoutis (one of her easiest and best recipes to know) and raise a toast to the grande old dame.
