West Elm Market, which opened in DUMBO in October, is filled with beautiful, practical things that have been carefully curated to improve your everyday life. It’s different than the West Elm you may know from couch or bed shopping–the market is like a general store crossed with a holiday pop-up market, and then winnowed down to a perfectly sized collection and made permanent. From bamboo laundry hampers that beautifully hide your dirty clothes while also providing storage space, to the first aesthetically pleasing ironing board you’ve ever seen, to wonderful smelling scrubs and soaps and carefully selected artisan delicacies from around the country, everything in the store is the best of its kind.
The DUMBO location, on Washington Street between Front and Water, is also home to a café, a collaboration with La Colombe Torrefaction–a Philly-based coffee roaster. West Elm Market has made it a point to strike up collaborations with a variety of small companies from around the country like La Colombe. Common Good, a company here in Brooklyn that makes household soaps and cleaning products, created a special sage scent for West Elm. They’re also featuring a special line of non-toxic non-stick pots and pans from GreenPan, and they’ve enlisted the geniuses over at Skillshare to host and curate their in-house classes. On Wednesday, Skillshare will be teaching a class on building gingerbread brownstones–there are still a few slots left, and on Thursday, a hot drink making class with St. John Frizell, owner of Fort Defiance.
The store is divided into four main sections: Kitchen, Care and Repair, Garden and Personal Care and you’ll find must-haves, and must-gives, in each category. We’re loving these colorful bamboo kitchen tools and matching raw wood cutting boards, their uber-useful hamper, this sweet cross-hatched garden tools set, and these awesome soaps from Meow Meow Tweet. It’s also a great place to pick up stocking stuffers or make a delicious holiday basket for a food-obsessed friend. West Elm Market’s selection of jams, sauces, bitters and pickles are sourced around the country and are constantly changing as customers go wild for one thing and clean it off the shelves, and then a new discovery arrives to take its place.
Trust us, you may go in to finish your Christmas shopping–but when you see that broom that actually looks nice in the corner of your kitchen, their non-toxic non-stick pans, and the cool paper placemats and table runners, you’ll realize just how often you’ll be back to pick up supplies and see what’s new.
