You probably know that the G Train now stops at Nassau Ave. in Greenpoint on the weekends, instead of crossing into Long Island City like usual, as part of 12 scheduled shutdowns this summer and fall. If you’re not a fan of shuttle buses, that means you need another way to get to The Total Long Island City Immersion this Saturday, July 13 where there’ll be free flowing Summer Ale and Brooklyn Lager from Brooklyn Brewery, beer brunches, and comedy at our after party.
Luckily we have a few options.
Option One: A Free Ride
We’re partnered with professional, on-demand car service Uber to give new Uber users a free ride (up to $30 off) to or from the Immersion, using their free iPhone/Android app (or the mobile web app at m.uber.com).
That’s right–you “call” Uber using their app, and request a pickup by a professional driver who shows up in minutes. All payment is handled through the Uber app, so there’s no need to pay or tip the driver with cash. You can even see the car coming toward you on a map!
This is how to get $30 off your ride:
-Download the free Uber iPhone/Android App (or sign up at uber.com/go/TotalLIC for the m.uber.com feature)
-Sign up with all of your information and enter the promo code TotalLIC.
-Request a ride from an uberX car 5 to 15 minutes before you need one, and $30 will be applied toward your first ride. So if you are leaving from Greenpoint–like the Nassau Ave. G stop–it will definitely be free, and if you are hailing an uberX from Park Slope, the ride will cost you roughly $6 (if you pick the UberBlack or UberSUV it’ll be $16-35 more). Option Two: The East River Ferry
If you’ve yet to take the East River Ferry or love any excuse to take it, this is a prime opportunity to hop on at DUMBO, Williamsburg or Greenpoint and get off at Long Island City. There, you can either walk to Alewife, one of the Immersion card pickup points, or you can take the free bus to the new LIC Flea, which is just down the street from LIC Bar, our other Immersion card pickup point. The bus to and from the flea runs in a continuous loop throughout the day. (Here’s a map of all the Immersion stops, the ferry and the flea.)
Option Three: Ride Your Bike or Rent One from Rolling Orange
Biking to LIC is super easy for North Brooklynites or intrepid cyclists from anywhere in the city. And if you want to arrive by Dutch bike, you can rent one from the new Williamsburg outpost of Rolling Orange Bikes at 160 North 6th Street. Mention the Immersion, and your daily rental will be $25–$10 off the normal daily rental fee–and you can rent it for 24 hours, so you won’t need to rush back by 7pm to return the bike. Just call ahead to make sure they’ve got a Dutch bike for you in stock: 347-554-4162.
If Rolling Orange is out of bikes, there are three Citi Bike stations in Williamsburg, the northernmost locations outside of Manhattan.
Option Four: MTA All the Way
Yes, the G train stations from Greenpoint Ave. through Court Square in LIC are closed, but there will be shuttle buses to all three stops. You can also bypass the G entirely by taking the any train into Manhattan and transferring to the 7 train to Vernon Blvd-Jackson Ave., which is a short walk to Alewife. And if you’re in North Brooklyn, the B62 bus is another fine choice.
