Looking for something free and awesome to do this weekend? The DUMBO Arts Festival, an indoor/outdoor interactive exhibition and celebration featuring the work of over 400 contemporary artists from all over the world, is back for its 17th year starting Friday, Sept. 27. As in years past, you can expect to see artists at work in their studios, painting murals, performing in the streets, or projecting large-format digital work on the neighborhood’s buildings and bridges. Some of the highlights of the 2013 festival include a wooden ship in the East River with a sail made of hundreds of drawings by NYC kids, an enormous pixelated portrait of Chelsea Manning composed of 1,600 colored flags, a giant, transforming quilt in Brooklyn Bridge Park and an interactive Dada playground for kids. The official hours are 6-9pm on Friday, noon to 9pm on Saturday and noon to 6pm on Sunday, so be sure to carve out a few hours to experience one of the coolest art events around.
