A Very Brooklyn Valentine: Six New Treats for Your Sweet

By

Even if you’re not up for an extravagant Beyonce-themed Valentines dinner, this faux-holiday is as good an excuse as any to sample some sweets. Here are six new Brooklyn dessert creations that love birds and lonely hearts alike can get worked up about.

1. Bourbon Vanilla Magic Choux

When French banker Sophie Jaeger decided finance wasn’t for her, she really went the full Brooklyn: she quit her job, traveled the world, became a yoga teacher and realized what she really wanted to do was open a bakery. It’s all a win for us, as her new Caprices by Sophie in Northside Williamsburg  serves up these delectable little “magic choux”–cream puffs with crunchy pecan tops and rich bourbon-vanilla filling. They also come in flavors like caramel salty butter, lemon curd and champagne.

2. Gin Donuts

Patisserie Tomoko, a new French-Japanese bakery in Williamsburg, has a full range of dessert options for those who take their after-dinner eating options super-seriously. For dine-in customers at the eight-seat bar, there’s a $13 five-course tasting menu of petit fours and other sweet treats, with a $9 wine pairing to boot. The inventive offerings change daily, ranging from earl grey chocolate mochi to beer caramel-chunk sundaes, but the ones that really caught our eye are these booze-meets-baking glazed gin donuts.

 3. Nutella Banana Sticky Buns

The Robicelli’s team are already well-loved for their inventive cupcake creations, but now that the husband-and-wife duo have opened their own Bay Ridge store, they’re churning out all kinds of craziness. The best thing spotted yet: one of their famous sticky buns, now filled with slow-roasted bananas, brown sugar, and Nutella. Yes, please!

4. Walnut Apple Cake with Malted Cream Cheese Frosting

Nine Chains, the new Ditmas Park bakery from the Farm on Adderly team, is largely focused on breads and savories–and is worth visiting for those alone–but they also bring it with the over-the-top sweets, including this moist apple cake topped by a frosting to end all frostings.

5. Red Velvet Macaroons

Another dessert-focused husband-and-wife team, Dan and Odehel Magor have been selling their innovative macaroons at markets around the city for some time; they just recently put down roots with The Bakeshop by Woops on Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg. In addition to building off the popular tradition of red velvet cake, their macaroons come in flavors like peanut butter, blueberry, coffee, and dark chocolate.

6. Marshmallow-Pocky Ice Cream

Everyone’s favorite off-the-wall Brooklyn creamery is upping the insanity this winter with their latest and greatest flavor: Calcifer’s Hot Cocoa Coals. Little bits of Pocky, those tasty chocolate-coated Japanese breadstick candies, are broken up into a toasted marshmallow ice cream, with swirls of cinnamon and chocolate. I don’t care what the groundhog says he saw–ice cream season starts now.
