May is a tipping point in the year, with things definitely heading in a hotter direction. Expect to find more outdoor activities to take advantage of over the next few weeks, as warm-weather events and programming start making their way back onto our calendars. Be it reading, riding, or a trip to the beach, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the seasonal shift.

Lit Crawl comes back to Brooklyn in May, turning unconventional spaces like bars, boutiques, galleries and even laundromats into impromptu places for book lovers to come together and enjoy free readings from local writers. Greenlight Bookstore is spring cleaning and organizing a sidewalk sale of excess stock, and our favorite butcher, Tom Mylan, comes out with his first cookbook later this month (with a foreword by Brooklyn Based editor-in-chief, Annaliese Griffin).

Pioneer Works and Proteus Gowanus have both organized occasions to get down for a good cause this month, and May also sees the return of Celebrate Brooklyn! dance parties in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Brooklyn Film Festival will screen 100 international films over a 10-day period toward the end of the month and IFC has films exploring two polarizing topics, breastfeeding and drag culture, to check out as well.

Make sure to mark Memorial Day weekend on your calendar. Not only is it the first four-day weekend we’ve had since February, New York City’s 14 miles of beaches reopen that Saturday, ushering in another season of surf, sand and sun bathing.
