For years we’ve delivered an email every Wednesday called The Tip Sheet that lays out the best ways to spend your week in Brooklyn. Today, we’re kicking off a new style of listings that present our personal picks in a format that’s way easier to read. Aside from the obvious fun to be had this week, like watching the first single-elimination match of the World Cup on Sunday at noon, heading to Fort Tilden to see Patti Smith at the free arts festival, Rockaway!, or catching Warpaint’s free Celebrate Brooklyn! concert on July 26, it includes all the things each of us would love to, or plan on doing ourselves, in an ideal week. Kate’s picks:
- YA novels and OITNB are great and all, but why not treat yourself to a dose of highbrow culture when the Metropolitan Opera returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park for its free, summer recital series? No need to be fancy—a burger from the new DUMBO Shake Shack might just be the perfect picnic accompaniment.
- I live a few blocks from the new Morbid Anatomy Museum, and I’ve been waiting very impatiently for the grand opening, which finally happens this Friday night at 8pm—big bonus that my favorite local resto, Runner & Stone, is doing the wine and food, which makes the $50 ticket price easier to swallow.
- Beat the heat at one of the city’s many free outdoor public pools, which open for the season on Friday. Morning and evening adult lap-swimming, which I finally got around to doing last year and loved, doesn’t begin until July 7, but it’s worth registering now to ensure you get a slot for the summer.

- On Wednesday, I’ll be wading through the tourists at Rockefeller Center to see Jeff Koons’ outdoor installation, Split Rocker, being unveiled ahead of his retrospective opening at the Whitney on June 27.
- Fort Greene’s French bistro iCi has a new happy hour deal that sounds like the perfect way to bone up on biodynamic wines.
- Taking my girlfriends to go watch Obvious Child because the indie flick is finally screening at BAM and Nitehawk Cinema.

- If there’s a sicker person than GG Allin, a legend in the hardcore punk rock scene who died from an accidental heroin overdose in 1993, I surely do not want to meet him. This Thursday at Nitehawk Cinema catch a screening of the documentary Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies, plus a Q&A with director Todd Philips (Old School, Starsky & Hutch, The Hangover).
- Late night dancing with DJs spinning funk, soul and hip hop on vinyl at a secret location with a 90-person cap sounds so much better than a typical Friday night out an overcrowded dance club blasting the latest top 40s nonsense. RSVP for Jackpot! Loft Edition No. 4 and receive the addy and 411.
- Campiness, B-movies and dancing sound like a good date night? Grab your partner for Tromadance film festival at The Paperbox. The dance party on Saturday night will run you $10 (suggested donation) and includes live music from The Netherlands, Hellbent Hookers and more.

- Last Friday I stayed up all night finishing Amy Sohn’s new book, The Actress—it’s more fun than US Weekly, and it won’t leave you feeling brain dead and dirty. Catch her at BookCourt on Tuesday for the release party.
- Every time I photograph food it looks inedible. Karen Wise is teaching a class that could change that on July 9, at the new private dining room (PDR) of Naturally Delicious. Tickets include BBQ.
