What to see at the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival this week

By

This week we officially enter summer, and a stretch of sunny days – an optimal time to head to the Prospect Park bandshell for the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. This weekend’s remaining shows bring together a fiery night of Latin and African rhythms and an international dance company performing a piece inspired by James Brown. Time to get down.

Friday, June 24: ¡Cubanismo! / Ricardo Lemvo with L’Orchestre Afrisa International

Trumpeter Jesús Alemañy, who began leading traditional Cuban son bands at 15, and his dance band ¡Cubanismo! helped inspire an even deeper level of affection for the sounds of Cuban dance music in the 90s, before Buena Vista Social Club rode the same wave of popularity. Opening for him is Ricardo Lemvo, together with his band Makina Loca and members of the L’Orchestre Afrisa International. The Congolese musicians will get the fiery dance party started by showcasing the African roots of Cuban music.

Saturday, June 25: PHILADANCO

In 1970 the trailblazing choreographer Joan Myers Brown created the Philadelphia Dance Company, PHILDANCO, to welcome African American artists shunned from other schools and companies. Now a world-renowned modern dance company, they’re returning to the bandshell for the first time in over a decade to perform a dazzling program that draws from their works including “James Brown: Get on the Good Foot, a Celebration in Dance” and the New York premiere of the elegant, classical piece, “Between the Lines” by Francisco Gella.
