Transportation to and from Red Hook is possibly the biggest roadblock for visitors who want to enjoy all the new openings (and reopenings) happening along the waterfront, which makes the news that the NYC Economic Development Corporation is extending its summer ferry service to Red Hook until the end of the month a big win for the neighborhood. The free ferries will run on weekends from Pier 11 in Manhattan, making stops at Van Brunt Street and IKEA before circling back across the East River, and they’re offering free transfers to the East River Ferry, too. If you’re around this weekend, hop on a boat and head over to the Columbia Waterfront Fall Festival, on Saturday from noon-6pm. The outdoor event promises live music, food vendors and garden tours to boot.
