Did you know that the first battle of the American Revolutionary War was fought right here in Brooklyn? All right—the first “official” post-signing-of-Declaration-of-Independence battle, but it was definitely the biggest of the entire war, and took place in part of what is now Green-Wood Cemetery. To mark the battle’s 236th anniversary and celebrate the brave patriots who helped make the United States an independent nation, the Green-Wood Historic Fund is hosting a whole day of activities to engage with our collective history, explore our past, and pay respects. There will be a reenactment, a commemorative ceremony, a Battle of Brooklyn Parade with the Regimental Band of United States Merchant Marine Academy, and if you’re quick enough to reserve a spot, a trolley tour led by local historians. It’s a great way to spend a day with your family–or fellow history buffs!
