Oktoberfest at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

UPDATE: The Oktoberfest is sold out! Sign up for the LLL mailing list to be notified of any last-minute ticket availability and to be the first to know about the next event.

In August, Brooklyn Botanic Garden invited Brooklynites (and BB) to a Gatsby-esque cocktail party. It was the inaugural meeting of their brand-new Linnaean Libation League, and guests were treated to copious drinks, after-hours access to the Garden’s gorgeous grounds (right beside the lily ponds!), and lots of pretty people watching.

On Thursday, October 22, the League reconvenes with a seasonal celebration: an Oktoberfest-themed party featuring local craft beers, artisanal foods and cheeses, and smart talk — about beer! — inside the Fragrance and Shakespeare Gardens.

Four stellar selections will be on tap: Connecticut brewer Thomas Hooker’s Octoberfest Lager (considered by many to be the best Oktoberfest-style beer in America); Dogfish Head‘s seasonal Punkin Ale; Smuttynose‘s Belgian-style Star Island Single; and Doc’s Draft Hard Apple Cider. All will be paired with delicious farmstead cheeses from Sprout Creek Farm in Poughkeepsie and served with Brooklyn-based Z Crackers. Rick’s Picks will be sampling an array of their artisanal pickles, and Saranac will be providing nonalcoholic beverages including their Root Beer, Shirley Temple, Orange Cream and Ginger Beer sodas (and you thought they only did beer!)

While enjoying this delicious food and drink, the Garden’s Director of Science, Dr. Gerry Moore, will enlighten us on the botanicals behind beermaking with New Yorker contributor Burkhard Bilger, who wrote about Dogfish Head and the rise of American craft brewing last year.

Like the inaugural LLL event, little letterpressed calling cards will be scattered around cafes, restaurants, and bars in Brooklyn, including the Greene Grape wine shop, Oslo Coffee, Champion Coffee, Baked, Franklin Park, and Ortine. Bring one, signed, and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a year’s free admission to Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Tickets, on sale here, are just $25 and include all food and drink — and the chance to explore one of Brooklyn’s natural wonders after hours.
