As much as we love Brooklyn and as much as we’re looking forward to warm weather, it can get a little, shall we say, muggy and claustrophobic here in the summer. So we’ve found a few summer camp options, all designed for grown-ups, that will get you out of the city and into the fresh air, or at least into different muggy air. We promise, you won’t have to write your name in your underwear, unless you want to.
Camp Pocket Utopia
Like a traditional summer camp, with tennis lessons, arts and crafts, pancake breakfasts and rustic cabins, but staffed by artists and designed to generate conversation and ideas. What? Pocket Utopia is a project run by artist Austin Thomas designed to connect artists and other lively thinkers. What better way to conspire than in the woods, over pancakes.

The Maine Event
Our friends, and yes, family members, at The Meat Hook and Roebling Tea Room are headed back up to Saltwater Farm (pictured above, the ocean is just out of the frame on the right) in Maine this August for another marathon session of butchering, pickling, preserving, chicken killing, beachcombing and eating. There’s a lobster bake and a pig roast planned, as well as loads of DIY tutorials from some of Brooklyn’s finest food minds. And, our lack of objectivity is your gain. Tickets go on sale May 1 and you have first crack at them.
New York State Summer Writers Workshop
Held at Skidmore College in lovely Saratoga Springs, the New York State Summer Writers Workshop is a series of two-week sessions in fiction, poetry and non-fiction prose taught by working writers. This summer’s line-up includes Rick Moody, Mary Gaitskill and Carolyn Forche. Like all the good parts of college, all over again and without student loan payments at the end.
Two sessions, June 28-July 9; July 12-23
Saratoga Springs, NY
School of Visual Arts Summer Residency Programs
Ok, so not everyone can make it out of town for a week or two. The School of Visual Arts has intensive workshops in everything from photography to painting to book arts. Undergrad credits are available for these classes.
Month-long sessions run June 1 – July 2; July 6 – August 6
New York, NY
Ladies Rock Camps
The Rock and Roll Camp for Girls has spread from its origins in Portland, Oregon to cities like Atlanta and Philadelphia. Several of these also hold Ladies Rock Camps, including the Willie Mae Rock Camp in Brooklyn, which has a long-weekend camp for ladies that is easy to get to and super affordable. No instruments or musical experience necessary, just a will to rock out. There are also Ladies Rock camps in Portland, Philly, and San Francisco, among others, if you want to get out of town.
