BB Event: Garden Party Like It's 1910

By

In 1910, milk was 32 cents a gallon, average life expectancy for men was 48, the Ziegfield girls earned $75/week, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden was transformed from an ash dump to a glorious urban sanctuary.

On August 12, BBG and Brooklyn Based invite you to celebrate the Garden’s centennial with a one-of-a kind affair organized by the Garden’s Linnaean Libation League.

Like the LLL’s previous garden parties, this edition will be filled with fine food and drinks, and the chance to enjoy the Garden after hours with fabulously dressed guests. But we have more marvelous treats inspired by the era of BBG’s founding.

You can arrive early for a classic croquet game on Cherry Esplanade, while enjoying champagne cocktails courtesy of Chandon and peach-bourbon ice cream cookie sandwiches from melt bakery. Or, you can join us at 8pm, as we move the celebration to the Lily Pool Terrace, completed in 1921, and begin serving brews from Saranac and Hendrick’s cocktails–one featuring an artisanal, botanically-inspired syrup produced by P&H Soda and Syrup (who will also be serving fresh sodas, courtesy Sodastream, on the spot).

Hors d’oeuvres reminiscent of the era, with modern touches from Z Crackers, will be offered, followed by cake from Elegantly Iced, Brooklyn’s newest custom cake artist. Handpicked Music will be curating a playlist of ragtime and jazz standards that will help bring us back in time, and guests are encouraged to come in their finest garden party wear, especially in the styles of the early 20th century.

Before the night ends, a Brooklyn historian, together with a special guest from BBG’s past, will lead guests in a toast to BBG to honor its decades as a place of beauty, romance, science and learning.

Tickets for the croquet, Chandon and ice cream from 6:30-7:45pm, followed by cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and cake from 8-10pm, are $75 now $55, while tickets for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and cake only, are $40. Purchase them in advance here, and come celebrate BBG’s first century as the country’s finest urban garden.
