Summer may be over, but it’s not yet time to say goodbye to the block party. This Saturday, GreenHomeNYC is holding a DIY Green Block Party on 3rd Street between Bond and Hoyt in Gowanus/Carroll Gardens. Like your typical block party, this one has a number of local vendors, like the Red Hook Lobster Pound and SCRATCHbread; unlike your typical block party, other vendors include green-friendly orgs and companies like the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, Recycle-A-Bicycle, and brooklyn greenroof. The eco-friendly fun doesn’t stop there; events and demonstrations throughout the day highlight the importance of living green and suggest easy ways to get involved. Among the many events, highlights include free canoe tours of the Gowanus Canal at 9:30 and 11am (though show up early as space is limited); tours of the Brooklyn Ecopolis and Third + Bond to see sustainable living in practice; and the fantastically-named Jerko, the Gowanus Canal Water Vacuum, a salvaged houseboat conducting sustainable experiments. And if all that weren’t enough, an afterparty will follow at the Bell House beginning at 7pm.
