Highly Anticipated: Rare Exports

By

This is pretty much the most amazing trailer I’ve seen all year. I’ve spent the afternoon fantasizing about throwing a special Christmas Eve screening — perhaps accompanied by a creepy Yankee Swap.

On another note, Finland, where Rare Exports was made, has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, according to the World Heath Organization. Now, you hear about how there’s a high suicide rate throughout Scandinavia, despite the warm embrace of free child care, education and all sorts of fuzzy European social supports. It’s usually attributed to the months of darkness one experiences when living at the top of the world like that. Whether or not the Finns are dark because of the dark, well, they’re definitely dark. They’ve turned Santa into someone you’d expect to see on a Law & Order SVU double episode, with a side of human trafficking to boot. Though, when you think about it, we sunny, only moderately suicidal Americans are responsible for Silent Night, Deadly Night; Santa’s Slay and the entire notion of Tim Allen as Santa. Shudder.

The part about Finland having the highest suicide rate in the world isn’t really true. Finland is just one country that actually lists suicides as suicides, not “natural deaths”.
