BROOKLYN HEIGHTS Tonight’s opening at the Brooklyn Historical Society puts a new spin on art history. Nearly two years in the making, Artist and Artifact: Re|Visioning Brooklyn’s Past features artists, musicians, and writers who found inspiration in the Historical Society’s collection. Some artists took advantage of the collection’s artifacts to reflect upon interior lives, like Coney Island native Michael Schwartz’ play based on the neighborhood and Andrés Vera Martínez’ graphic novel telling the story of past, present, and future Brooklynites; others translated what they found to the modern-day, like Nora Herting’s photographs highlighting the diversity of contemporary Brooklynites and Meredith Bergmann’s bust of the formerly enslaved Sally Maria Diggs.
