DUMBO With modern-day burlesque placing such a heavy emphasis on a particularly postmodern sexiness, it’s hard to remember that it’s far from a uniquely contemporary invention. Tonight at powerHouse Arena, Liz Goldwyn will be reading from and celebrating her book Pretty Things: The Last Generation of American Burlesque Queens. The book examines burlesque through the years, highlighting such bygone luminaries as Gypsy Rose Lee, and includes a number of photos that bring the history of burlesque to life.
