Shivery Swim

CONEY ISLAND Saturday marks perhaps the chilliest tradition in Brooklyn: the Coney Island Polar Bear Club’s annual New Year’s Day swim. The over-a-century-old winter bathing club swims at Coney Island every Sunday throughout the winter; they make a rare exception for New Year’s, when they invite the general public out to join in the wintry fun. The Polar Bears recommend bringing warm clothes, towels, and cameras for both observers and participants; they also request that all involved make a donation to the Camp Sunshine retreat.
