This Saturday, February 12, have a taste of potluck-like fun at the grand opening of 61 Local, a new public house in Boerum Hill. Owner Dave Liatti’s menu of craft beer, wine, kombucha and hors d’oeuvres consists only of delicacies made by local artisans, from the buttery country pate by Brooklyn Cured to the fresh kick of McClure’s spicy pickles. But the night’s main attraction? The actual food and drink producers, many of whom will be in attendance to serve up their specialties at the party.
“Our goal is to support the amazing local foods and beverages made by our friends, as well as other artistic endeavors of the community,” said owner Dave Liatti. In fact, his own artistry is on display in the bar’s loft-like space, which features unique lighting like beer growlers hanging from the ceiling, and canvas-draped light boxes along the walls with hand stitched illustrations by neighborhood artist Iviva Olenick. The rest of the bar’s decor, including beautiful custom-made beer hall tables, were built by Stephen Feuerborn and Anne Mourier and Liatti as well.
How local is “local” when it comes to the menu items? While there are no strict boundaries for the food (which includes wine and beer made as close-by as Red Hook, and farmstead cheeses selected by Anne Saxelby as far as the Catskills), Local 61 aims to prove how easy it is to stay within state borders to create a robust and delicious menu.
The party begins at 3pm with brewers Ian McConnell and Sean Redmond from Sixpoint and Craig Frymark from Barrier Brewing behind the bar. Other confirmed guests who’ll be in and out throughout the afternoon and evening include Matt Tilden of SCRATCHbread, Shane Welch of Sixpoint, Evan Klein from Barrier Brewing, Betsey Devine from Salvatore Bklyn, Kelly Taylor of Kelso, Jake Dickson from Dickson’s Farm Stand, Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn, Scott Bridi of Brooklyn Cured, Laena McCarthy from Anarchy in a Jar, Antonio Ramos and Caroline Mak from Brooklyn Sodaworks, Eric Childs of KBBK Kombucha, and Christopher Nicolson, winemaker at Red Hook Winery.
