With talks of further cuts to education nationwide, the American educational system, already decimated in some parts of the country, is becoming even more endangered. 2010’s Waiting for Superman, a documentary directed by An Inconvenient Truth’s Davis Guggenheim, offers up some controversial suggestions for the educational crisis while featuring the emotional stories of five children waiting to find out if they’ll be among the lucky few to escape a broken system. Whatever side of the issue you fall on, the film is a powerful reminder that something needs to be done. On Monday, the film will be screened at BAMcinématek; afterwards, Geoffrey Canada, the charter school advocate and president/CEO of Harlem Children’s Zone featured in the film, will be present to answer any questions raised by the film.
