Sunday night’s event at Galapagos brings a whole new meaning to ladies’ night. Though just like many such nights before, women enjoy reduced entry ($15 to men’s $20), but the entertainment on Sunday is more baritone and soprano than bottle service. Galapagos’ monthly Opera Grows in Brooklyn series has been bringing cutting-edge contemporary opera to DUMBO since 2009; since March is Women’s History Month, this edition features scenes from operas composed by women. The three operas to be showcased tackle topics like reality TV and murder (Kamala Sankaram’s Miranda), surrogate prairie dog families (Prairie Dogs, presented by Opera on Tap), and a lesbian couple in the 1800s (Patience & Sarah, presented by American Opera Projects) – all of which could safely be described as “not your grandma’s opera.” Stick around afterward for the chance to meet the artists.
