Before Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom were big enough celebrities to be dating Natalie Portman and Andy Samberg respectively, they were just a couple of musicians in a tour van on the verge of fame. The Family Jams, a documentary directed by Kevin Barker, follows the two famed freak-folksters on tour with Vetiver in 2004; the film incorporates performances by them and guests like Antony and the Johnsons with behind-the-scenes moments exploring their experiences as musicians on the brink. On Friday night, the movie makes its New York City theatrical premiere at reRun, DUMBO’s “gastropub theater.” Tickets, a steal at $5, are available for screenings through Thursday, April 14th; director Barker will be present at the Friday-Sunday shows.
