The Tiger’s Wife

Open Source Gallery, which burned last fall in the Associated supermarket fire on 5th Ave., has risen from its ashes, and is celebrating its new space at 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Aves, with the opening of a new show by artist Naoe Suzuki and corresponding play by Anne Phelan of Dramahound Productions. The multi-media installation “Mi Tigre, My Lover” and the play are based upon the colorful life of Mabel Stark, a renowned female tiger trainer in the early 1900s who, despite being mauled several times, kept returning to the cage, and seemed to prefer her cats over her five husbands–even letting one cub sleep in bed with her. The play, “My Tiger, My Lover” will be performed on June 25th at 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM, with Suzuki’s highly detailed drawings, on view through July 9, as the backdrop.
