If you haven’t read the English novelist Alan Hollinghurst yet, do yourself a favor and pick up his latest book. Hollinghurst is perhaps best known for his 2004 Booker Prize-winning novel The Line of Beauty, a sumptuous tour-de-force about the aristocratic upper class and an emerging gay culture in eighties England. (That said, his other books are just as captivating.) Seven years later, Hollinghurst has finally come out with his first book since The Line of Beauty. The Stranger’s Child is perhaps even more epic in scope, starting with the simple story of an aristocratic poet disrupting the family life of his friend and secret lover and then sprawling out across decades, with characters crossing paths and retelling their own versions of that fateful weekend. Needless to say, he’s a Brooklyn Based favorite, and we were thrilled to see that he was making a rare appearance in Brooklyn to support his new novel. He’ll be at BookCourt this Sunday night, reading from The Stranger’s Child and signing copies.
