After you finish stuffing yourself full of turkey and cranberry sauce and can’t stand the sight of your relatives, why not take off for a few hours to a whole other dimension? There are plenty of films to escape to this weekend, starting with Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, screening at BAM on Thursday and Friday (along with Alexander Payne’s purportedly near-perfect The Descendants). On Friday, ReRun kicks off VHS Turkeys–two-for-one double features of weird and wonderful cult films like John Waters’ Maniacs. And on Monday, BAM is screening the heart-wrenching Sophie’s Choice, based upon the William Styron novel and set in Victorian Flatbush. It’s the second film in its year-long Brooklyn Close-Up series, which is accompanied by samples of Brooklyn Brewery beer in the lobby–in this case Local 1 and The Companion–from 6:30 to 9:30pm.
