In a weird calendar quirk, Cinco de Mayo and Derby Day both fall on Saturday, May 5 this year. Pine Box Rock Shop in Bushwick is splitting the difference and celebrating Cinco de Derby, with live music, drink specials (bourbon AND tequila) and betting. A portion of the day’s proceeds go to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the largest equine sanctuary in the world. Papacitos in Greenpoint is hosting an all-day drink-a-thon from 11am to 4am in their backyard with surf rock, mariachi bands and, of course, tacos. And, the bars and restaurants of Grand Street in Williamsburg are hosting a Cinco de Mayo Cactus Crawl with deals on food and drinks at places like Huckleberry Bar, Burnside, Los Primos and St. Austere.
