Bgirls and Wildcats

By

In case you didn’t know, one of the best break dancers in New York, Rokafella, is a poet, musician and bgirl named Ana Garcia, who danced backup for singers and in videos until starting her own hip-hop dance outfit. On Saturday night, she’ll be performing with ladies only during Girls Hit the Streets, part of the Brooklyn Arts Council’s Half the Sky Festival, a celebration of Brooklyn women performing artists. Joining her will be the spoken-word duo Climbing PoeTree and the awesomely named Gowanus Wildcats, an all-girl drill team that began in Brooklyn’s Gowanus Houses Community Center in 1970, led by founding member, Renee “Juice” Flowers. The free performances begin at 7pm at The Actors Fund Arts Center, 160 Schermerhorn Street. More details at brooklynartscouncil.org.
