Red Hot, Red Hook Arts

By

In an age of slick, pricey and heavily tweeted events, Dance Theatre Etcetera’s Red Hook Festival remains refreshingly unpretentious. This community arts fest is now in its 19th year, and has mastered the art of providing great music, dance and spoken-word poetry in an atmosphere resembling a laid-back school picnic day, with a killer view of the harbor (and free kayaking with the Red Hook Boaters). This year, the festival opens on Friday night with a special multimedia project of photography and poetry titled Women’s Work that honors Red Hook women. Then on Saturday from noon to 7pm at Valentino Park & Pier, powerhouse Kymbali Craig hosts the main event, featuring singer-songwriter Maya Azucena, poet Mahogany Browne, Spanish Harlem’s dance group KR3TS, hip-hop artist La Bruja, and Soul Steps, as well as performances from over 150 young artists from across Brooklyn.
