The Books Beneath the Bridge series was so much fun, it inspired WORD to program a new installment of waterfront readings called Words by the Water, together with Open Space Alliance in East River State Park. For the next three Mondays the Greenpoint bookstore is presenting authors from various local publishers and presses, and tonight at 7pm Melville House has tapped Dave Tompkins, author of How to Wreck a Nice Beach: The Vocoder from World War II to Hip-Hop, The Machine Speaks, to play vocoder music and recount the history of each song, followed by a Q&A and signing. Akashic Books and Tin House round out the series.
