Lose the Baby Weight, Not the Baby!

Stroller Strides Workout

Baby weight is not a seasonal thing. Women are having babies 365 days a year and they’re battling the postnatal bulge for months after giving birth. And as some of us can attest, it’s not uncommon for women to be trying to shed extra baby poundage a year or more after giving birth. So, anytime is the right time to discover new workouts that’ll help get our pre-baby bodies back.

One common difficulty among new mothers is finding time to work out when you have a new baby to care for. So we found five neighborhood workouts where you can lose the baby weight, but not your baby. Throw together a combo gym-diaper bag and leave your excuses in the nursery, because now ya got none!

1. Mighty Mamas at Williamsburg Movement and Arts Center

Owner Lakey Evans-Pena created this class five years ago after having her second child. In a studio for children, plenty of moms were coming pregnant with their attending children’s siblings and were ready to shed weight in the familiar studio. Postural work and core work are the basis of the routine. This workout is specifically designed to work on your post-baby bod. So, all those areas that got a little out of whack in those nine months will be attended to. The instructor encourages moms to work at their own pace. Lakey says, “We’ve had mamas with us for all 5 years, multiple pregnancies, and many friends of friends who drop-in because they have heard about the class or seen what a difference it has made in both physical and mental shape, and they want to join the happiness.”

Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:00 am-10:00 am , visit www.wmacc.com  or call 718.866.6811 for pricing and drop-in info.

2. Stroller Strides in Prospect Park

Stroller Strides is the perfect workout for moms with babies who can hang in the stroller while mom pushes her way to a new body. The hour-long workout includes power walking and intervals of body toning, using exercise tubing and the stroller. The workout can also be modified for pregnant moms with another in a stroller. Stroller Strides uses Prospect Park as their stomping grounds and meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 am. It also offers a working moms’ Run Club with two programs, a couch to 5k class and a 10k and beyond program, the runs are designed for the working mom who either wants to start running or get back to running after the baby. Anna Catherine says, “Babies are always welcome in their strollers which is a lot of fun because the moms who come without their strollers take turns pushing the kids.” The Run Club has two new sessions starting in September.
