The Craziest Pizzas in Brooklyn

By

This week on Brooklyn Based, I looked at the best next-generation fried chicken dishes popping up around the borough. My favorite is the one above: fried chicken-topped pizza at Pete Zaaz, the new Crown Heights pizzeria from the folks behind Fort Greene’s No. 7. If you’re familiar with that inventive eatery, you won’t be surprised that fried chicken pizza is hardly the craziest thing on Pete Zaaz’ menu. Here’s a look inside the madhouse:

Shoestring zucchini pizza, with corn salsa, fontina and pickled tomatillos.

Gyro stromboli: leg of lamb with mozzarella, purple cabbage, and heirloom tomato-tzatziki salad and ancho/jalapeno salsa.

And that’s just the regular menu. A couple more specials from their Facebook feed…

Jerk plantains pizza with black beans, mozzarella and rum peanuts.

Mexican chorizo pizza, with red onions and kiwi.

Mussels! With chorizo, feta and pea shoots. Not sure how you eat a mussels pizza, but I support it nonetheless.

Coconut tofu pizza at brunch, when you can add a fried egg to any pie.
