The Best Medicine

I don’t know about you guys, but after Sandy and the leadup to the presidential election, I am pretty much on my last frayed nerve. I can’t think of a time when I have needed a laugh more, so I’m beyond psyched that the New York Comedy Festival is back this week to provide them in spades. This year’s lineup is spectacular, with shows by big names like Kevin Hart, Key & Peele, Aziz Ansari, Patton Oswalt, Bill Maher, Jim Gaffigan, Robin Williams, Rob Delaney, and Ricky Gervais taking place all over the City from Wednesday night through Sunday. While most of those acts are at traditional Manhattan establishments like the Apollo and Caroline’s, there are some special events going on in Brooklyn too. Union Hall will be hosting three shows: tonight’s Tell Your Friends! (featuring Victor Varnado, Janeane Garofalo, Frank from Mystery Science Theater 3000, and more); Thursday’s Dark Lords of Comedy with Jared Logan, Dan St. Germain, and Mike Lawrence; and Saturday’s The Party Machine with Michael Showalter, Dave Hill, Gabe Leidman, and Debbie Shay. Also, tonight, there are two free shows to choose from: BAM + IFC’s Get it Out There with Bobby Tisdale, and the always great Big Terrific show at Cameo–it’s free and given all the superstar funny people in town this week, who knows who will show up?–K.H.
