Hoop Dreams

Jay-Z concerts and the Brooklyn Nets are great and all, but it is this weekend, when the Atlantic 10 Tournament comes to town for the first time ever, that dyed-in-the-wool college basketball fans like me finally reap the benefits of having the Barclays Center in our backyard. This year’s A-10 frontrunner, St. Louis, is seeded to win the bracket, but perennial post-season powerhouses like Butler, Temple or VCU are more than capable of pulling off an upset. Tickets start at $25 and are available here. If you’d rather watch the tournament (not to mention March Madness) from the comfort of a barstool, let me suggest Half Court in Crown Heights. Empty fish tank and random framed portrait of Allen Iverson aside, it hits all the marks required of a great place to watch college hoops: a good, cheap beer selection; a stack of menus for food delivery; knowledgeable patrons; and, most importantly, several TVs playing the audio from the actual games and not, inexplicably, Top 40 on a jukebox (yeah, I’m looking at you, 200 5th). – K.H.
