Critical Mass

By

Over the past several years, the Red Hook Crit has (deservedly) become an institution. The unsanctioned, fixed gear bike race has grown from a totally-underground race celebrating founder David Trimble’s 26th birthday to an international series sponsored by Rockstar Games. Don’t think they’ve sold out, though—the race is still as edgy, exhilarating and oftentimes dangerous as it’s ever been. The main event, featuring everyone from bike messengers to world-class racers, starts at 9pm, and is preceded by a men’s and women’s 5K. The Crit has a wonderful festival atmosphere, with merch stands, food trucks (this year, including Wafels & Dinges) and occasionally even public art, so get there early to fill up and get a prime vantage point. After the race, an afterparty will be taking place across the street at Kidd Studios with DJs and a crazy sound system, and we hear Pizza Moto will be popping up at Realty Collective’s 351 Van Brunt St. office. UPDATE: Red Hook plant shop/soap maker Saipua is having its first ever houseplant sale this weekend, a good excuse to head to Red Hook Crit early and get that macramé hanger and weeping succulent you’ve been waiting for.
