Just Folks

If you had said even a decade ago that Brooklyn would become a real-deal destination for folk music, some Kings County residents might have told you to go “folk” yourself. But in the space of a few years, the scene has exploded, and if anything, our unexpected urban frontier has brought a new vigor to the genre. It’s definitely something worth celebrating. Cue the Fifth Annual Brooklyn Folk Festival, taking place all weekend long at The Bell House. With a whole mess of folk musicians playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including local folk badass Alex Battles and the Whiskey Rebellion, there’s no better introduction for a beginner or place to dive in for a devotee. Plus, there will be movie screenings, singing, instrument workshops, and the fan favorite Banjo Toss (yes, you read that right). Passes are available for all three days or for full single days, as are individual tickets for afternoon or evening shows.
