Gangstagrass, a hip-hop / bluegrass hybrid that has coined its very own sound–“Rappalachain”–may be the most representative performer of The Red Hook Fest, a few days of music, dance, and family fun organized by Dance Theater Etcetera each June. This year’s incarnation will be especially poignant as the entire neighborhood–white, black, Latino, wealthy, artisanal and poor–celebrates the fact that it came out of Sandy together. The return of the Red Hook Earth and Surf Parade after an 11-year hiatus is another reason this year’s Fest will be extra special. The new Red Hook Rebirth Parade begins at Coffey Park at 10am and continues to Valentino Park and Pier, where the day’s performers, from Nicholas Leichter Dance to salsa band Avenida B to Gangstagrass, will take the stage between noon and 7pm.
