The MARY A. WHALEN, a retired oil tanker in Red Hook’s container port that Brooklyn Based has felt affection for ever since we first saw an opera aboard her, wasn’t ravaged by Superstorm Sandy in the typical way. The ship survived the storm fine, but all of her historic documents, oral history files, replacement engine parts and other equipment housed off the ship was wrecked. Short-handed and unable to tap into the help of Sandy volunteers due to tightened restrictions in the container port, PortSide NewYork, which provides a ton of great programming aboard the vessel, is seeking support via donations and a special night at Fort Defiance on Tuesday that will help them secure the recovery funds they need. Tickets are $100 a head for an intimate dinner including a cocktail hour, nibbles and a three-course meal, though you can donate funds whether or not you can attend.
