The Nets kicked off their season this past Wednesday night, with a four-point loss to the Cleveland Cavs on the road that we’re sure most fans would rather not talk about, which makes news that tickets went on sale today for the Big Apple Classic the perfect distraction to turn our attention toward. The college basketball double header is coming to the Barclays Center on Dec. 15 with back-to-back games from four of the country’s top, historically black colleges.
For me personally, college hoops have always been more intense to watch and thrilling to root for than their professional counterpart, so having the chance to see these four teams face off against one another on our home court is a big win in my book. Virginia State University and Virginia Union University tip off first at 3 pm, followed by Delaware State University and Howard University starting at 6pm.
The classic, now in it’s seventh year, is about more than just fast breaks and free throws however, it’ll have an educational component this year, too. Part of the ticket price is going to provide student mentoring, educational workshops, personal and professional development, as well as career planning, through Educational Learning Opportunities, the nonprofit BAC decided to pair with this year in an effort to support the African American community both on and off the court.
