Even if you wrinkle your nose at the prospect of winter camping, you can probably find time for free camp food and whiskey, right? On Thursday, Dec. 5, lace up your city boots and hoof it to Atlantic Avenue for a winter camp “cookout” with NYC-based Bush Smarts, which makes cool tools for campers (and those of us who like to imagine ourselves outdoorsy). Using their rugged cooking equipment, they’ll be talking camp kitchen setups and whipping up hot grub like a spicy bean dish from Ghana called RedRed and serving it alongside whiskey drinks at Hatchet Outdoor Supply Co. on Atlantic Ave., where the first 10 to purchase gear or gifts will get a free Bush Smarts Hip Flask, and two lucky people will get a $50 gift cert to Hatchet Outdoor Supply. There are just 50 spots left, so sign up in advance. And if you decide to try out your newfound knowledge of campfire cooking, Bush Smarts co-founder Kevin Sterling recommends Harriman State Park, which is just an hour north of the city, accessible by Short Line bus and rail, and loaded with trails, backcountry sites and water sources.
