As a society, we spend a lot of time trying to predict what the next 12 months will have in store for us around this time of year–checking everything from horoscopes to farmer’s almanacs–but the organizers of TEDxGowanus are less concerned with what our love lives will look like in 2014 and more how the neighborhood, situated around a superfund site, will transform in the coming months and years. An independent offshoot of the popular TED Talks conferences, this one-day event is taking place at The Green Building and 501 Union on Jan. 26. The theme is Inspiring Community, and while tickets have sold out, you can tune in to a free webcast of the talks at 12:15pm that day at tedxgowanus.com. Over 20 speakers–designers, entrepreneurs, artists, historians and community leaders–have been tapped to deliver talks about the neighborhood and its ever-changing landscape–both developmentally and demographically, as well as culturally. Speakers will discuss the neighborhood’s past, present and future.
