We’ve never really gotten the whole bed and breakfast thing. Sure, if you’re traveling abroad, staying with a local and getting the scoop on where to go and what to see has tons of appeal. But quaint New England inns with hovering innkeeps who get peeved when you sleep through breakfast? We’ll pass.
That’s why we’re so excited about The Spruceton Inn, a new “bed and bar” that is opening in the Catskills this summer.
Our pals Casey Scieszka and Steven Weinberg (who you may remember from his BB column, Five Questions, One Drawing) spent all winter renovating a motel in the Catskills that used to be known as the The Schwarzenegger’s Sunshine Valley House–yes, a cousin of that Schwarzenegger. Their vibe is friendly without being invasive–they’ve got Weber grills, lawn games and hammocks ready for your use and there’s a canteen and bar, called Conan’s Corner, where you can get simple snacks, beer, wine and sundries. Many of the rooms have kitchenettes, so you can settle in with some groceries and not worry about civilization for a few days. Basically, you can hang around and be social with the other guests, or hole up and soak in the peace and quiet–it’s up to you.
If you feel like exploring, there’s plenty to do in the Catskills–there are lakes and good hiking, tubing, little towns to wander through, good thrift store shopping, great farmers markets and restaurants, and gorgeous scenery everywhere you turn.
