If the idea of a chamber music performance makes you instantly sleepy, you definitely haven’t seen The Knights. This Brooklyn-based collective of virtuosic musicians call upon such diverse traditions as jazz, klezmer, and indie rock in their original arrangements and compositions. The New Yorker has called The Knights “one of Brooklyn’s sterling cultural products… known far beyond the borough for their relaxed virtuosity and expansive repertory.”
In their “Blueshift” series, individual members of The Knights are highlighted through small group performances. In the latest installment, this Friday at BRIC, The Knights will be performing original songs by their violinist and vocalist Christina Courtin, as well as arrangements of folk songwriter Judee Sill and pieces inspired by Bach.
The Knights got their start when the Jacobsen brothers, violinist Colin Jacobsen and cellist Eric Jacobsen, invited friends to participate in late-night chamber music reading parties at their home. The Jacobsen brothers, who are also founding members of the string quartet Brooklyn Rider, serve as artistic directors of The Knights, with Eric Jacobsen as conductor.
In December 2012, the Jacobsens were selected from among the nation’s top visual, performing, media, and literary artists to receive a prestigious United States Artists Fellowship. The New Yorker has called The Knights “one of Brooklyn’s sterling cultural products… known far beyond the borough for their relaxed virtuosity and expansive repertory.”
“Blueshift: Chamber Music Curated and Performed by Members of The Knights” comes to the BRIC House Ballroom at 647 Fulton Street this Friday, April 8, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door, and you can buy them on the BRIC website.
