Here’s a story you probably haven’t heard about an ice cream you’ve enjoyed since you were a kid: In 1960, Reuben Mattus combined the finest ingredients to create rich, velvety Häagen-Dazs ice cream in the Bronx. Sixteen years later, Mattus’ daughter, Doris, opened the very first Häagen-Dazs shop at 120 Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights.

And this Saturday, July 16, the brand is holding a grand reopening, by new franchisee Michael Shuster, and celebrating New York City’s original ice cream shop with giveaways and prizes.

The Brooklyn Heights shop has gone through a complete renovation and features the Häagen-Dazs brand’s new, modern footprint, which incorporates old-world tradition with modern touchpoints that create the ice cream café experience of the future. “This shop is akin to Brooklyn. Brooklyn is full of old-world heritage and has seen its own transformation into modern and very desirable New York neighborhoods,” said Schuster. “Our team is proud to be part of the Häagen-Dazs family and the Brooklyn community.”

On Saturday, July 16, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams will lead a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:45am to help open the shop. Then, between 11am and 3pm everyone who visits the shop to help celebrate the grand reopening will receive one free ice cream scoop and a $1 off coupon for a future visit to the shop. A few lucky patrons will also be given $10, $15 and $25 gift cards, and one lucky winner will receive an ice cream for a year gift card.*

Häagen-Dazs mascot Coneman will also be on hand so make sure to get a selfie and enjoy that free scoop.
